About Maine Coons
The Maine Coon is a very large and beautiful breed of cat that generally is known to be intelligent in nature and big in stature. The origin of the Maine Coon is not 100% certain, as many legends and story surround the development of the breed.
The most common belief, is that the Maine Coon originated in the state of Maine from selective breeding for a feline that was strong and able to withstand harsh winters and conditions. This explains the physical appearance of the Maine Coon, which is one of the largest cat breeds with a very thick fur coat and mane. It's raccoon like tail helped in naming the breed, but it is an appearance reference only, as the Maine Coon is not a relative of the Raccoon.
The most common type of Maine Coon is one with a brown and tabby like appearance, although there are variations on this including the silver tabby, red tabby, and blue and white tabby.
Maine Coons have a reputation as one of the more intelligent cat breeds with an easy going personality. They love to follow their human friends around and share in day to day activities. They are playful and active cats and enjoy staying busy.
They remain one of the most popular cat breeds today, and can be bought from reputable breeders across the country.
